De C.V.Sustainable development bene ts both the environment and the customersSustainable development is part of Mirka’s DNA, and it also represents a major compet- itive advantage in the eyes of customers and other stakeholders. During the year, Mirka achieved its objective of switching from fos- sil fuels to more environmentally acceptable alternatives. In 2016, the Oravainen factory switched from fuel oil to pellets, and at the Jepua plant, the back-up energy generator is also now fuelled by biogas.The company views sustainability as rele- vant across the board. Examples of sustaina- ble development include Investors in People certi cation, product structure, choice of raw materials and a continuous programme to boost ef ciency in logistics. Sustainability is also part of Mirka’s ethics policy.To ensure quality, Mirka has adopted man- agement systems in line with the ISO 9001Mirka Brasil Ltda.(Quality), ISO 14001 (Environment) and OHSAS 18001 (Health and safety) stand- ards. Comprehensive training was arranged during the year in connection with the re- vision of the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 stand- ards. All factories have been awarded cer- ti cation under these three management systems. The process of certifying subsidi- aries in accordance with the ISO 9001 qual- ity system continued, and the companies in China, Singapore and Turkey achieved cer- ti cation during 2016. The Mirka Group will also achieve certi cation under the revised ISO 9001:2015 standard shortly.People – Mirka’s most vital resourceOne of Mirka’s competitive advantages is its committed and motivated staff. Mirka has made signi cant investments in skills devel- opment.Substantial efforts were devoted to staff health and well-being during the year. The16
